SANTO DOMINGO, Dom. Rep. (AA) – The death toll rose to 18 from a two-truck collision in northwest province of the Dominican Republic, the National Transit Authority (Amet) said Monday.

Ten other victims were injured in the crash that occurred late Saturday in Maria Trinidad Sanchez province, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of the capital of Santo Domingo.

"Our researchers determined that the driver of a tow truck took the wrong way and crashed head-on into the other truck that was carrying religious people at the crossing known as Majagua," Amet spokesmen Diego Pesquira said during a press conference.

The victims were a group of Christians who were returning from a religious service in Guaraguao, he added.

Thirteen people were killed immediately and five others have died at the hospital, according to Amet, which said minors and a pregnant woman were among the dead.

Since it was built in 2008, a number of fatalities have occurred on the road that links Santo Domingo with the tourist locale of Samana.

Thirteen people were killed and 24 were wounded in a bus accident last June. A week later, five people were killed and two others were injured in another collision.

Dominican Republic has the highest death rate of traffic accidents in the Americas with 29.3 deaths per 100,000 residents, according to a study on road safety released in last year by the World Health Organization.
