Economic Cooperation Organization Kickes Off İn Iran
Turkish FM Davutoglu represents Turkey at the 21st Foreign Ministerial Meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
The 21st Foreign Ministerial Meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) kicked off in Iranian capital Tehran on Tuesday.
Foreign ministers of Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan and Azerbaijan as well as prime minister's advisor of Pakistan, Turkmenistan's economy minister, Kazakhstan deputy foreign minister and ambassadors of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are participating in the event.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is representing Turkey in the meeting.
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, represented by Foreign Minister Ozdil Nami, is participating the meeting as "observer state" for the first time.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the ECO needs reforms during his opening speech. "The reforms should meet the needs of the member states of the organization." he suggested.
Rouhani said "The ECO's 20 years of experience is a light that brightens our future," and noted that "the organization should cooperate at the highest level."
The meeting would focus on enhancing cooperation among the member countries in the economic, technical, and cultural fields.
It would also discuss ways to promote mutual collaboration in energy, trade, transport, environment and agriculture sectors.
The ECO, an intergovernmental organization involving seven Asian and three Eurasian nations part of the South-central Asian Union, was founded by Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. ECO's Charter was signed on 15 March 1995 in Islamabad, Pakistan. It provides a platform to discuss ways to improve development and promote trade, and investment opportunities. - Tahran
