– In Turkey's largest copper mine, 320 miners have officially gone on strike, at Çayeli Copper Mining Company, located in Black Sea province of Rize, on Oct. 30.

With respect to collective labor agreements having been pursued between the company and the Mineworkers Union of Turkey, decision to go on strike was declared, as the employer's suggestion of "zero increase in wage" have been refused.

While gendarmerie officers have taken wide security measures in front of the company, the mineworkers waiting at the scene are expected to make a press statement on the strike.

Miners speak up after Ermenek, Soma disasters

Following the deadly mining disaster in Soma, leaving at least 301 miners killed and Ermenek mine accident leaving at least 18 miners trapped in 2014, unions have been raising concerns over safety concerns and violations against workers' rights.

Accordingly, early this year, tens of thousands of metal workers have gone on strike around Turkey, to protest poor wages in the sector and demand a better collective bargaining agreement with employers in the industry.
